Rainbow Drive-In has been a local staple since 1961, when Sejiu and Ayako Ifuku opened its doors to adoring patrons. Today, the Ifukus’ son-in-law, Jim Gusukama, serves as vice president and operates the establishment.

Locals and tourists alike have long flocked to the famed eatery to see diverse menu items come together on one plate lunch. Shoyu Chicken ($6.25) and BBQ Steak ($7) remain among local favorites.

Recently, Dining Out caught up with colleagues David Maafu Wendt and Daniel Sataraka, who enjoyed a business lunch on the drive-in’s breezy lanai.

David Maafu Wendt: “I’ve been coming here longer than most of these young people have been alive. I’m eating plate lunch — mix plate with fish, fried chicken and teriyaki steak with rice and mac salad.”

Daniel Sataraka: “I also had a plate lunch.”
