Tee Up for Tasty New Dishes

Whether one plans on hitting a bucket of balls, or desires a hearty meal before, during or after work, Newtown Drive Inn hits a hole in one with a stellar selection of plate lunches and freshly baked pizzas.

The new dining destination can be found at Newtown Golf Driving Range in Aiea and offers abundant complimentary parking and a clean, open-air seating area cooled by steady breezes. New-town Drive Inn also presents beer and soft drinks and serves as a perfect pau hana destination, especially for those wishing to avoid the rail project-related traffic.

Chef and owner Reid Matsumura has created an alluring menu of plate lunch options and side dishes and explains that golfers as well as residents and laborers in the nearby Pearl Harbor, Pearl City and Aiea communities approve of the hearty selections. Hamburger Steak ($8) features a 60/40 blend of hamburger and pork in two large patties, along with gravy and onions over rice. Plate lunches at Newtown Drive Inn come with a scoop of spaghetti-tuna salad, and diners may substitute delicious fried rice for just $2 more.

Pastele Stew ($10) is another top seller as diners enjoy the Puerto Rican favorite that includes braised pork shoulder, garlic, onions, plantains and fresh pico de gallo — Matsumura estimates that he cooks up more than 100 pounds of Pastele Stew each week as customers clamor for more. The chef also prepares side dishes that pair perfectly with one’s favorite beverage, including Cucumber Kim Chee ($5) in a spicy marinade featuring sweet and spicy notes.

“It’s a perfect option for pau hana to avoid rush hour traffic,” says Matsumura. “We cater to the golfers, but we welcome everyone to bring their families, have a refreshing beverage and enjoy a great meal.”

With a large brick oven stoked with kiawe wood that emits a sweet, smoky aroma, Newtown Drive Inn also cooks up delicious Inferno’s Pizza on weekdays after 3 p.m. and weekends after noon.

Each Inferno’s Pizza selection is hand-crafted and prepared with the finest, freshest ingredients and baked to crispy perfection at 800 degrees in a distinctive dome-shaped oven. Newtown Drive Inn offers a variety of tasty pizza pies that cook in just five minutes, including All Meat ($18) with pepperoni, sausage and soppressata Italian dry salami. Cheese ($13), Pepperoni ($14), Margherita ($15) and Spinach, Garlic and Tomato ($16) also are available fresh out of the piping-hot oven.

Weekly specials are served as well, and diners may place take-out orders for delicious meals on the go.
