In the local community, there are some things that most people have in common, two of them being a love for island comfort food and a desire to go to “Fabulous Las Vegas.” Zippy’s Restaurants, in partnership with Vacations Hawaii, is making it possible to enjoy both of them with its annual Las Vegas Giveaway promotion.

The next time you head to your neighborhood Zippy’s from now until Feb. 12, be sure to pick up an entry form with any purchase to possibly win one of 24 grand-prize trips for two from Honolulu to the “Ninth Island.”

“There is not only one chance, but 24, to win a trip for two to Las Vegas, courtesy of Vacations Hawaii,” confirms Jeanine Mamiya-Kalahiki, marketing manager for Zippy’s Restaurants.

Zippy’s and Vacations Hawaii have come together for more than 10 years to bring special promotions to kamaaina customers, and seeing as they’re both companies rooted in serving the local community, it’s no wonder their partnership is still going strong. “Vacations Hawaii and Boyd Gaming Corp. (its owner) all started with family companies like Zippy’s, which, of course, grew over time, but we have that tie as well,” adds Vacations Hawaii sales and promotions manager Kevin Kaneshiro.

To coincide with the Vegas promotion, Zippy’s is bringing back its popular value meals, including Spaghetti & Chicken Mixed Plate ($6.99 fast food, $8.15 restaurant), available through Jan. 31. The satisfying meal offers the pasta noodles served with your choice of meat sauce or Chili, as well as golden Fried Chicken, garlic bread and mac salad.

“We are starting the new year off right with our customers’ two favorite things: Vegas and Spaghetti & Chicken Mixed Plate. Both are very popular with our customers,” says Mamiya-Kalahiki.

Those looking for lighter dining options in the new year will love Fried Chicken Mandarin Orange Salad ($10.25 restaurant only; served through Jan. 31), featuring slices of crispy chicken resting on a bed of Kunia aquaponic greens. The salad gets bright bursts of flavor from juicy Mandarin orange wedges, crisp red onions, savory bacon bits and hearty croutons — and it’s all drizzled in a sweet vinaigrette.

Breakfast lovers can satisfy their cravings for Caramel Fudge Waffle or Pancakes ($7.25 each, restaurant only) day and night through the end of February, while munching on a scoop of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, macadamia nuts, hot fudge and caramel sauce. Mamiya-Kalahiki adds that “we are introducing French Toast ($7.25, restaurant only, available though end of February) as an option to our Caramel Fudge Waffle/Pancake. This came about because customers thought that it would be another perfect blend, and our French Toast is one of our best-sellers.”

As Zippy’s embarks on yet another year of serving Hawaii’s hungry diners — just as it has done since 1966 — kamaaina continue to order local favorites such as Pork Saimin ($10.80, restaurant only), which is perfect for chilly days this time of year. The noodle-filled dashi soup heats up with char siu, roast pork and all the saimin fixings.

Feeling Lucky?

According to Vacations Hawaii sales and promotions manager Kevin Kaneshiro, now is a better time than ever to enter Zippy’s Las Vegas Giveaway promotion because the lucky winners will get to enjoy the new renovations at the California Hotel & Casino.

“The entire first floor of the casino is brand new, so it is a wonderful transformation,” says Kaneshiro of the multimillion-dollar revamp. “The sports lounge right in the middle of the casino floor is literally the best place in Vegas to watch UH sports because there’s so many former Hawaii residents that live in Vegas, and 80 to 90 percent of our hotel guests are Hawaii residents.”

In addition to the fantastic accommodations, winners of the promotion will make the round-trip on wide-body 767 aircraft. Be sure to fill out an entry form with any Zippy’s purchase by Feb. 12.
