Simply superb sausages

Last Sunday was Groundhog Day, and legendary prognosticator Punxsutawney Phil failed to see his shadow, meaning we’ll have an early spring. So ignore this week’s gloomy weather and start looking ahead to sunshine and cookouts.

Of course, an old-fashioned cookout isn’t complete without hot dogs, and in Hawaii, the winning wiener would have to be Redondo’s hot dog. Named after founder by Frank Redondo, Redondo’s started out as a food processing company back in Kapahulu in 1949, then relocated to the Nimitz area in 1960. In 1973, Redondo’s moved to its current location in Waipahu, which was expanded and renovated in 1993. The company is the largest sausage producer in the state, and remains dedicated to local production to preserve and deliver the tradition, quality and authentic sausage products to the people of Hawaii and those who visit the islands.

The company provides a plethora of flavors.

Redondo’s famous hot dogs are called Hawaiian Winners. Per Frank Redondo’s wishes, these 16-ounce links are instantly recognizable thanks to their bright red coloring. The secret formula hasn’t changed since the very beginning, and it’s still kept safe and secure as a hand-written recipe. There are also Traditional 16-ounce Franks without the red color, as well as 16-ounce Teriyaki Winners that incorporate a local shoyu-sugar blend for a unique local flair.

Prefer beef instead? Redondo’s also offers 12-ounce Aloha Aina Beef Franks made from locally grown and raised grass-fed cattle. There are no additives, antibiotics or nitrates in this farm-to-table product.

In addition to hot dogs, Redondo’s also offers Arabiki Sausage in regular, cheesy and spicy varieties, and produces a variety of local favorites including Char Siu, Portuguese Sausage, Pipi Kaula and Loco Moco Gravy. It’s no wonder the company has been a go-to choice for island eaters for seven decades.

“We’ve been here since 1949, and have made the same products with the same formula here in Hawaii,” says Redondo’s production manager Kendrick Ho. “We strive to incorporate local products and ingredients, and everything from our Pipi Kaula to Portuguese Sausage is made here. Our well-known products like the red Hawaiian Winners are so iconic that people take them as gifts when visiting friends and family on the mainland.”

Redondo’s products are available at all major grocery stores in Hawaii as well as Sam’s Club and Costco locally — the products are sold exclusively in Hawaii. For more information on where to pick up one’s favorite Redondo’s hot dogs and products, call 6715444, or visit redondos.com.
