Originally built as one of Zippy’s first locations — it was the fourth site opened by the popular restaurant group 45 years ago — Zippy’s Waimalu recently underwent an important renovation that has transformed the popular dining destination to reflect an innovative concept.

The Waimalu location now is Zippy’s Express, a revamped operation featuring some of Zippy’s top-selling favorites that are perfect for those on the go. As the last days of summer continue to heat up, Zippy’s Express is rolling out cool savings throughout its menu. For instance, Zippy’s award-winning Zip Pac ($8.95) and Korean Chicken Plate ($8.90) are available as part of the express menu.

“We took the top-sellers, our ‘Zippy’s Favorites,’ as well as a limited selection of Napoleon’s Bakery favorites, and incorporated them in the Express menu. We are testing this concept and, based on customer feedback and popularity, we will determine if we should expand the idea.”

Diners also can order their favorite items, whether it be for an enjoyable meal at home, a tailgate party or other special gathering, by the barrel. Choices include Beef Stew ($37.50), Sweet & Sour Spareribs ($44.50), Chili, Portuguese Bean Soup and Chicken (prices vary). For an additional $10, diners may add rice and macaroni salad to make these barrel purchases a meal deal. Call Zippy’s Express for availability of these and other items, which are offered during specials hours only at Zippy’s Express from 10:30 a.m. to closing, while supplies last.

Zippy’s is well known for its original-recipe chili as well as the popular juicy, golden-fried chicken. These two favorites are available at Zippy’s Express in a variety of ways, including the Chili & Chicken Mixed Plate ($8.40) or a simple yet delicious Chili with Rice ($4.10, regular size).

A variety of exclusive Zippy’s items are available during specials hours, such as Spaghetti & Chicken Mixed Plate ($7.75, Zippy’s Express only). Diners are encouraged to call ahead and check on the available specials, as they rotate daily.

To coincide with the kickoff of football season, Zippy’s presents its 2015 Tailgate Giveaway: Seattle vs. St Louis. Zippy’s and ESPN 1420 will send a lucky winner and a guest — along with airfare, hotel and tickets all included — to a professional football game on Dec. 27, 2015. Entries also qualify participants to win a weekly Tailgate Pac valued at more than $800, so be sure to enter now through Nov. 23. Entry forms are available at Zippy’s locations, so stop in today.

Zippy’s also is offering a special Kokua Pac Star Edition ($8.15 at the fast food counter, $9.35 in the dine-in restaurant). This popular Kokua Pac includes Spam, Portuguese sausage, breaded shrimp and Korean fried chicken over rice with takuan. As part of the promotion, 25 cents from each Kokua Pac sold will be donated to help fight multiple sclerosis in Hawaii; customers also may purchase a special cut-out for just $1 each; and can donate additional monies at designated boxes at any Zippy’s location.

Diners are invited to see why Zippy’s recently was honored with a trio of commendations in Honolulu Star-Advertiser‘s annual Hawaii’s Best People’s Choice Awards for serving up the “Best Family Dining,” representing the “Best Late Night Eatery” and offering the “Best Bento,” the latter of which recognizes the iconic Zip Pac.
