Since serving up its first piping-hot bowl of saimin in 1969, Shiro’s Saimin Haven has become a mainstay for multiple generations of Hawaii families.

Shiro’s features convenient locations in Aiea at Waimalu Shopping Center as well as in Ewa Beach, and it serves up all sorts of local comfort food, from iconic saimin to fried noodles, breakfast items, plate lunches, bentos, sandwiches and, of course, “burgas.”

A multitude of catering selections also are available at Shiro’s — the ideal options for feeding friends and family members gathered for special events such as graduation parties.

The restaurant was founded by Franz Shiro Matsuo, who eventually acquired the appropriate title of “Mistah Saimin.” While Shiro has since passed away, his legacy lives on through the hard work and dedication of his family, including Mistah Saimin’s grandson Bryce Fujimoto, who serves as Shiro’s restaurant and catering manager.

Shiro’s diverse catering menu is perfectly suited for any get-together, including family celebrations, business functions and graduation parties. Customers may choose from a host of selections available in small (15 people), medium (25 people), large (35 people) and extra-large (50 people) pans. Garlic Chicken ($27.50 for a small pan), for example, is fried until crispy and prepared in a sweet, savory sauce yet remains moist and tender with each bite. Roast Beef with Gravy ($31.50 for a small pan) is another popular catering option, as the tender meat is roasted “low and slow” for hours and served with old-fashioned house-made gravy. Pork Adobo ($31.70 for a small pan) also is a top seller and features succulent pork that’s marinated in a blend of spices and prepared authentically.

The popular Cosmopolitan Selection (minimum order for 20 people, includes four sides and choices of entrée dishes, prices vary by selections) is another catering option that allows for flexibility when accommodating varying tastes at a special event. Customers are encouraged to call the restaurant at 488-8824 for more information and detailed pricing options.

“I tell customers that we base our portions on what the hungriest football player imaginable would enjoy. We don’t mess around with our portions,” says Fujimoto.
