While Oahu’s Windward side may be known for its pristine beaches and clear skies, Uncle Bobo’s has long been attracting both tourists and locals with its authentic barbecue fare. Situated across from Swanzy Beach Park in Kaaawa, the charming beachside eatery offers high-quality smoked meats, as well as local favorites.

“Because I am originally from New Mexico, Georgia and New Orleans, I have always had a strong connection to barbecue,” says restaurant owner Robert Joyce. “My wife and I got married here more than 13 years ago, so since then we have become very familiar with what locals like to eat as well.”

Truly a labor of love, Uncle Bobo’s array of smoked meats is a three-day process. “After a full day in our homemade dry rub, we smoke the meat for a minimum of eight hours in our hickory and oak smoker,” explains Joyce. “We then serve the meat on the third day after letting it rest.”

First-timers to Uncle Bobo’s love BBQ Pork Ribs Plate ($15.95), which is complemented by house barbecue sauce, rice and a choice of mac salad, coleslaw or ranch-style beans. Bobo Burger ($6.95) is another crowd-pleaser made with Big Island grass-fed beef, and often paired with a side of Garlic Potato Fries ($3.95).

In addition to smoking meats, Uncle Bobo’s bakes six different types of breads, including its own burger buns and artisan rolls. “Every day I get to the shop at 3 a.m. to get all the bread going,” says Joyce. “We also make our own Malasadas ($1).”

Always one to try something new, Uncle Bobo’s Hawaiian French Toast ($4.95) is a popular choice for those craving something sweet.

“We basically cut the sides off of a malasada, turn it into French toast and serve it with ice cream, local pineapple and mandarin orange syrup,” says Joyce. “It goes perfect with our Cafe Latte ($4.25), made from locally sourced espresso beans.”
