It was way back in the swingin’ 60s when Larry Yafuso went out on a brave limb and opened his own business. Originally based in Waimalu Shopping Center, and aptly dubbed “Larry’s Bakery,” this self-named pastry shop is now a sweet, Salt Lake storefront.

“My father passed away when I was young,” explains Larry’s daughter Iris Yafuso-Toguchi, now co-owner with her brother, Lance Yafuso. “He worked very hard to build our brand, and I like to think he would be proud with what we’ve continued to do here in his name.”

This month, in addition to its usual colorful and cream-filled kaleidoscope of mouth-watering confections, Larry’s is proud to showcase these special novelties:

• Pumpkin Loaf ($6) — Moist and flavorful, this pumpkin-infused sweet-bread is spiced up with nutmeg and cinnamon undertones that are ooh-la-la delicious!
• Pumpkin/Custard Pie ($14.95) — An old family recipe that takes a traditional, 9-inch deep-dish pumpkin pie bottom layer and adds creamy custard to the top, making for one killer combo.
• Festive Fall Cookies — Beautifully designed autumn leaves ($1.50) and Thanksgiving turkeys ($2.75) are fun, fresh ideas that Larry’s has incorporated this month, adding a seasonal spin to its delicious everyday cookie options.
• Seasonally Decorated Spam Cans ($6) — A Thanksgiving take on Larry’s usual Spam cans, Yafuso-Toguchi saves the iconic brand’s containers from the morning’s musubis and fills them with baked goodies like cookies, brownies and more. “Many customers even like to bring in personalized cards, gift certificates or business cards to include in the cans, which is no problem at all,” says Yafuso-Toguchi.

After sampling any one of these sensational sweets, you will understand why “Made from scratch” is the perfect motto for Larry’s. One taste tells the difference, because you just can’t get baked goodness like that from a box.

Closed on Thanksgiving Day, Larry’s will be taking orders on a first-come basis for custard, fruit and chiffon pies, as well as the bakery’s famous butter and parker house rolls. These sell out fast, so nab one now before the popular treats are gobbled up!
