Buffets are great for many reasons: variety, it’s all-you-can-eat, and if you’re with a group there’s something for everyone.

At Five Star International Buffet in Royal Hawaiian Center in Waikiki, you also can count on the food to be fresh, delicious and of top quality. Even the water served comes from a special filter purifier system. Add a comfortable, modern interior, along with a welcoming, friendly staff, and it’s sure to be a five-star experience.

The restaurant, which is originally from Hokkaido where there are three other locations, opened about a year ago and is the first location outside of Japan. Its head chefs are from Hokkaido, but the buffet features not only Japanese food, but also American (such as Prime Rib), Chinese (Fried Rice and Fried Noodles), Hawaiian (Loco Moco and Poke) and others.

The lunch buffet consists of more than 30 items, including Fish of the Day, Pork Katsu, Braised Short Ribs, Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura, Pasta of the Day and Pizza, as well as a variety of salads and fresh fruit.

At dinner, the menu expands to more than 50 items, including the customer favorites Steamed Lobster, Steamed King Crab, Steamed Snow Crab, Miso Sauteed Scallops and Prime Rib.

There also is a great assortment of sushi and desserts for both lunch and dinner. The buffet area has two sides with an open kitchen behind each, allowing the chefs to quickly prepare and replenish foods right away.

Described as a family-friendly and casual gourmet buffet restaurant, there also is a full bar, and semi private areas that can seat 13 to 40 people, perfect for special gatherings.

Lunch buffet (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) costs $19 or $12 for children ages 5 to 12. Dinner buffet (5 to 10 p.m.) costs $48 or $24 for children ages 5 to 12. Complimentary meals for children aged 4 and under. A kamaaina discount also is available — free soft drink for lunch, 15 percent off for dinner, or 25 percent off dinner after 8:30 p.m. There also is happy hour from 2 to 5 p.m. featuring a pupu menu and half-off all alcoholic drinks.
