Pizza. Just the word can make your taste buds tingle. There’s a plethora of pizza places out there, so it’s easy to pig out on the popular pies (or daintily nibble on a slice) — unless, of course, you’re vegan. Sure, you can request no cheese, but what’s the fun in that?

Zpizza has a vegetarian-friendly solution: vegan cheese. Yes, and there’s not a bit of dairy involved (go to zpizza.com for a list of ingredients).

The pizzeria’s Berkeley Vegan ($12.95 small, $23.95 large and $26.95 extra large) comes with a regular or whole wheat crust (gluten-free crusts are available for small only) topped with marinara sauce, vegan “cheese,” veggie burger crumbles, zucchini, tomatoes, mushrooms, red onions and bell peppers. It’s colorful, healthy and dairy-free — a vegan dream come true.

“That’s really what all the vegan people order,” says owner Cesar Llarenas. “They also can choose gluten-free crust with a choice of toppings and vegan cheese.”

That’s right, veggie lovers. There are 20-something different pizzas offered on the Zpizza menu, but if you don’t see exactly what you’re craving, why not build your own? The possibilities are practically endless. Choose among the three crusts, add your favorite sauce (basil pesto, barbecue, chipotle pesto, marinara, roasted garlic, Thai peanut or 100 percent organic tomato), decide on a cheese (feta, Gorgonzola, mozzarella, Parmesan, provolone, ricotta or vegan) and then pile on the veggies (more than 20 to choose from). To kick up the flavors even more, feel free to add fresh basil, cilantro, oregano or pili pili oil, since they’re offered at no extra charge and add a zing of fresh flavor.
