When brainstorming restaurant ideas for breakfast or dinner, the Nimitz airport area probably doesn’t come to mind very often. Sometimes, though, thinking outside the box can lead you to a pleasantly unexpected surprise, one that may await at Plaza Cafe. A landmark restaurant within Best Western hotel, Plaza Cafe has been serving kamaaina, short-term hotel guests and military families since the 1970s.

“We serve breakfast seven days a week and have dinner four days (a week). A lot of locals come for the seafood buffet,” says Plaza Cafe manager Rudy Fao. “We also have a lot of transient guests, tourists coming and going. Another big seller is the military. They usually stay at the hotel for long term until their housing is arranged.”

A charming restaurant, Plaza Cafe is continuing its Mother’s Day tradition May 13 with its annual brunch buffet. Priced at $34.95 (adults) and $18.95 (keiki ages 4-10), there is an exuberance of buffet items to enjoy including Snow Crab Legs, Eggs Benedict, Kalua Pork Hash, Homestyle Oxtail Soup, Poke, Salad Bar and more. To make your Mother’s Day buffet reservations call 837.1547.

“It is a very generational tradition, with mothers bringing their daughters, and daughters bringing their daughters. You can expect great food, great service, as always. It’s going to be very festive,” adds Fao.

If you cannot make it for Mother’s Day, Plaza Cafe offers a similar dinner buffet on Friday and Saturday evenings priced at $30.95 (adults), $26.95 (adults, but does not include crab legs) and $16.95 (kids ages 4-10). The seafood buffet features a bounty of choices including lomi lomi salmon, mussels on the half shell, a create-your-own-pasta station, and Plaza Cafe’s signature bread pudding and soft serve sundae station.

“We try to serve equally to our kamaaina and travelers. Having a restaurant in the hotel is a real benefit. It’s really convenient for travelers,” says Fao.

May also serves as Military Appreciation month at Plaza Cafe, as the restaurant is offering 15 percent off its menu prices for military and their families. This offer cannot be combined with any other vouchers or coupons.
