Large Appetizers to Satisfy Appetites of ‘Fat’s’ Patrons

Ever get tired of restaurants that offer up appetizers that end up being appe-teasers?

Whether it’s a lack of quality, or small portion size, a poor pupu can ruin one’s dining experience.

Fortunately at The Fat Greek, diners won’t run into the aforementioned dilemma.

The cozy eatery nestled in Kaimuki near the intersection of Saint Louis Drive and Waialae Avenue serves up fresh Greek fare in plentiful portions. The Appetizer Platter ($36) allows diners to sample Fat Greek’s most popular pupus on one big plate. The hearty platter serves four people, and features hummus (blended chick peas), babaganoush (eggplant dip), spanakopita (baked spinach and feta cheese), feta cheese and olives, Greek fries (with or without garlic), merguez sausage (spicy lamb), Greek salad, mussels (infused with ginger, garlic, capers and a special sauce), dolmades (grape vine leaves stuffed with rice and herbs) and stacks of warm pita bread.

“Nobody else makes platters like that,” says Fat Greek co-owner Francois Provenza. “Even when you go to the mainland, Greek restaurants are very simple — nothing like this.”

The Appetizer Platter’s items also are available on the restaurant’s starter menu as a la carte offerings, and range in price from $4.50 to $6.

Not only are the items authentic and plentiful, but made fresh daily. According to Provenza, fresh batches of hummus and babaganoush are prepared three to four times a day to keep up with demand.
