One of my favorite things to bring to any potluck is a box of hot malassadas. These pillows of dough always are a hit — everybody loves them, especially me.

Dining Out readers, here’s a deal you don’t want to miss. Through Aug. 12, take advantage of a Hot Deals Hawaii offer where you can get an $11 voucher good for two dozen malassadas and two large, fresh drip coffees (regularly $22) at Agnes’ Portuguese Bake Shop. The deal is available at HotDealsHawaii.com, and vouchers are valid for six months — perfect for all those upcoming UH football game tailgate parties and holiday gatherings.

Agnes’ Portuguese Bake Shop has been in Kailua for about 45 years, and continues to serve many of its original favorites, including its famous Malassadas (90 cents each, $9 per dozen), classic Portuguese Sweet Bread ($3.79 per loaf) and a long list of pastries.

“We’ve tried to stay as true to the original recipes as possible because they’re good,” says Non deMello, who purchased the bakery 27 years ago. “Our malassadas are very traditional — nice and crunchy on the outside, and custardy smooth on the inside. It’s not a custard, but the dough has a nice creamy consistency to it, and, of course, it’s best eaten hot.”

Named after its founder Agnes Wright, the neighborhood bakery also has added many unique items to its menu over the years, including Sweet Dogs and Macau Manapua.

During the holidays, Agnes’ also honors its Portuguese roots with a selection of traditional foods, such as Bolo Rei, aka Portuguese King’s Cake, made with sweetbread and candied fruits — perfect for Christmas. And for Easter, you’ll find Folar, a Portuguese Easter bread with an egg in it.

As a full-line bakery, Agnes’ also is a local favorite for gourmet cupcakes and decorated cakes. The establishment also is able to set up a mini malassada stand at private events, such as luaus and weddings.

“We are just making an honest effort to produce a quality product, and keep the product line fresh and current,” says deMello. “I’m always trying to make stuff that my friends and family would eat. One of the nice things about baked goods and these holiday specials, is that anytime you can make somebody really happy for less than $10 — you have a deal.”

*Hot Deals Hawaii offer is limited to one voucher per party, per visit. May not be combined with other specials/discounts/coupons. No cash or credit back for unused portion; no cash value.
