Poke Bowl ($14)

Situated at the entrance of Kailua Beach, Kalapawai Market has been a beloved local neighborhood spot since 1932. The food is designed to fuel every local lifestyle, explains operations manager Kat Moon. Its classic favorites are inspired by home cooked meals, backyard barbecues and beachside picnics — because the company knows how Hawaii loves to eat.

“We are a family business that treats every team member as one of our own. That warm, welcoming vibe is felt by everyone who visits,” Moon says.

One of the delicious items sold is the Poke Bowl ($14). It includes a choice of shoyu or spicy ahi served over white rice with kimchi, wakame, furikake, daikon and carrots, pickled red ginger and sesame seeds.

In addition, a new deli menu debuted on June 18. It offers everything from breakfast items and cold and hot sandwiches to wraps, salads and pizzas. Two of the current best sellers are the Breakfast Burrito — with egg, pepper jack cheese, hash browns, black bean confetti, and a choice of bacon, kalua pork or avocado. It offers Andy’s Bueno Salsa on the side.

Another popular item is Da Skinny, which is packed with kalua pork, barbecue sauce, pepper jack cheese, and coleslaw, on brioche. Both of these items can be found on the company’s menus at Kalapawai Cafe & Deli-Kailua and Kalapawai Cafe & Deli-Kapolei.

The business also has a deli case with an array of pasta and fruit salads, samosas, meat pies and spanakopita. Moon emphasizes that the store is a one-stop shop with soft drinks, local beers, wine, coolers, ice, reef safe sunscreen, and beach toys.

In addition, the company recently added an online gift shop to its kalapawaimarket.com website which enables guests to order their favorite Kalapawai logo items, such as T-shirts, hats and glassware. What’s more, the business also features local favorites such as local salt water taffy from Aloha Snacks & Gifts, North Shore Goodies Coconut Peanut Butter, and 100 percent Kona coffee from Hawaiian Paradise Co.

Guests are also able to order gift cards that are available for use at Kalapawai Market, Kalapwai Cafe & Deli-Kailua, Kalapawai Cafe & Deli-Kapolei or the company’s sister restaurant, Zia’s Caffe Kaneohe.

CAN’T BEAT THESE BEETS

Among the tasty items available at Kalapawai Market is the Beet and Avocado Sandwich ($10). It includes shredded beets, avocado, goat cheese, pickled red onion, tomato and baby arugula on ciabatta. It is served with a choice of tossed greens, cole slaw, mac salad or chips.
