As local residents look forward to the exciting blend of cuisine and culture offered at the upcoming Okinawan Festival, Zippy’s Restaurants is helping kamaaina diners get a head start on the celebration with an Okinawan experience of its own.

In support of the Hawaii United Okinawa Association (HUOA) and its annual Okinawan Festival, which will be held Sept. 1 and 2 at the Hawaii Convention Center, Zippy’s is offering a special Shoyu Pork plate ($11.95 fast food, $13.75 restaurant). The plate features hearty cuts of pork cooked slowly in a shoyu sauce, served with rice and macaroni salad at the fast food counter. The special plate is available daily from 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. now through Aug. 31, and a portion of the proceeds from each Shoyu Pork plate sold will be donated to the HUOA — donations also will be accepted at designated boxes at Oahu Zippy’s locations.

Throughout August, Napoleon’s Bakery is offering a host of tropical inspired treats that serve as perfect remedies to beat the sweltering summer heat. Pineapple Snack Cake ($1.75) includes tangy pineapple mixed in a moist, rich cake topped with crushed pineapple. The brand-new Li Hing Pineapple Loaded Donut ($2.20) is a yeast donut infused with a pineapple filling, which is then covered with li hing mui sugar to create an alluring flavor combination.

Lychee Boba Cake ($12.50) is another special of the month. It is a 6-inch vanilla chiffon cake filled with lychee whipped cream and lychee boba, then frosted with lychee whipped cream and adorned with lychee boba pearls.

Guava Cream Cheese Square ($3.35) is another local favorite. The dessert consists of guava gelatin atop a cream cheese square, which then is placed on a graham cracker crust. Lilikoi lovers are in luck as the Lilikoi Bar ($2.45) is crafted to have a buttery shortbread cookie consistency and is baked with lilikoi curd filling.
