A CLOSER LOOK AT THIS WEEK’S HOUSE SPECIAL: COLORED BUTTER BREAD (ONE-POUND LOAF, UNSLICED; $6.50)

A sweet staple in the Salt Lake neighborhood, Larry’s Bakery has everything you need to satisfy your sugar cravings. Brother-and-sister team Lance Yafuso and Iris Yafuso-Toguchi oversee this family-run business founded by their father Larry — the bakery’s namesake — who passed away when they were young. For decades, Larry’s Bakery has whipped up favorites such as doughnuts, cookies, brownies, cakes and more, like clockwork.

Need a pop of color in your life? Larry’s Bakery’s Colored Butter Bread puts any ordinary sandwich loaf to shame. See what you’re missing and bite into a slice of fun. This bakeshop brings bread with bling!

The bread is a hot commodity especially during the holidays, as the bakery staff can customize the colors in the loaf to fit any occasion. “During Christmas, of course, we make our bread red, white and green. For the upcoming Chinese New Year (Jan. 31), customers can look forward to the color combination of red, white and yellow; and red, pink and white butter bread is a Valentine’s Day tradition,” Yafuso-Toguchi confirms.

For the most finicky eaters, Colored Butter Bread is the perfect solution, as it adds a whole new dimension of fun to every meal. Munch on PB&J sandwiches, colored French toast, bread pudding and mini tea sandwiches in style.

It’s best to call the bakery at least two days in advance to secure your order and personalize your loaf with your favorite colors. Bedazzle your bread even more and request Colored Cinnamon Bread for an additional 50 cents.

“Until this day, we still do the majority of our baking — kneading and rolling out dough — on the very table that my dad purchased in the late ’60s when he first opened the bakery,” says Yafuso-Toguchi. “It’s little things like this that keep his legacy alive.”

“Colored Butter Bread is an original recipe created by my dad,” says Lance Yafuso, noting that it’s your typical white loaf with a lot of pizzazz.

“We start off with the basic ingredients needed to make white bread, then we take the food coloring that we wish to use, add that to each individual mound of dough and twist it all together. Once it’s baked, the final result is a colored bread that both kids and adults love,” says Yafuso-Toguchi.

Larry’s Bakery’s standard Colored Butter Bread features a myriad of colors, transforming each slice into a rainbow. The bread is soft and fluffy, and the crust is skimmed with a hint of butter.
