You don’t have to travel far to experience all your Japanese favorites, as they can all be found right here at Hanaki Restaurant in Manoa Marketplace. The restaurant first opened its doors in 1996 as an all-youcan-eat buffet, before embarking on a new journey — one of oishi shabu shabu creations and other local Japanese cuisine.

General manager Mark Mitsuyoshi says customers of all ages can’t seem to get enough of Hanaki’s shabu shabu options, presenting diners with an eclectic array of soups and bowls/plates of vegetables, seafood and meats ranging from $2.50 to $4.50.

Also, sink your teeth into Hanaki’s Combination Plates (two choice plate $9.95, three choice plate $12.95), a perfect choice for the indecisive diner, offering up a variety of local favorites, including shrimp tempura, fried fish katsu, chicken kara age, tako yaki, homemade gyoza, deep-fried oysters, shoyu chicken and shoyu tofu.

Hanaki’s famous gyoza accompanied by a Two Choice Combination plate, featuring shrimp tempura and chicken kara age, boneless fried chicken with a light garlic batter. All combo plates are served with a bowl of miso soup and rice.

Shrimp Tempura Donburi ($11.95); Two Choice Combination Plate ($9.95)

Hanaki’s Shrimp Tempura Donburi tempts diners with savory vegetables cooked in a special lightly sweetened shoyu-base sauce, served with a steamed egg over hot rice. The meal is then topped off with two pieces of Shrimp Tempura. Another possible two combination plate pairing can include Shrimp Tempura and Fried Fish Katsu, served with a bowl of miso soup and rice.

Shabu Shabu Pot (Varied prices)

Shabu Shabu is a very interactive form of dining and is personalized to customers’ liking. A popular shabu shabu creation includes Chinese cabbage ($2.50), beef meatballs ($3.50), fish cake balls ($3.50) and sliced prime rib ($4.50) cooked in a piping hot Hanaki soup base ($5).
