Something New

Kare-Kare Bowl ($10.45)

Max’s of Manila, Hawaii’s go-to Filipino restaurant, is rolling out a new line of menu items that are absolutely irresisti-“bowl.”

Ready your utensils to dig into three different savory bowl selections, each including a generous helping of steaming white rice, which serves as a soft bed for classic favorites, including Crispy Pata, Kare-Kare and Lechon Kawali Sisig. The bowls are available at both Max’s locations (Honolulu and Waipahu) for just $10.45, Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Speaking of bowls, don’t forget to fuel your Super Bowl fanatics up with Max’s extensive catering menu on the big game day Feb. 4. The restaurant’s famous Max’s Fried Chicken, which is cooked to golden perfection, is sure to score big points, thanks to its 70-year-old recipe.

Lechon Kawali Sisig ($10.45)

A number of other selections await your choosing, and are sure to leave guests cheering for the MVP (“Most Valuable Plate”) of the game. Winning appetizers, such as Lumpiang Shanghai, and entrees like Pancit and Adobo also are available, as well as desserts like Banana Lumpia — which, by the way, goes perfectly with a scoop of ube ice cream.

THE ULTIMATE TRIO

Max’s of Manila presents its new line of rice bowls ($10.45 each). The Lechon Kawali Sisig bestows deep-fried cuts of pork belly that are tender on the inside and crisp on the outside. The Crispy Pata option is similar to the lechon, however, the pork is simmered in a special marinade first before being thrown into the deep-fryer, resulting in an extra kick of taste, especially when dipped in the accompanying soy vinegar sauce. For something more stew-like, Kare-Kare Bowl is the perfect pick, as oxtail, beef and vegetables are smothered in a peanut sauce and served with shrimp paste on the side.
