A CLOSER LOOK AT THIS WEEK’S HOUSE SPECIAL: NANBAN CHICKEN SANDWICH ($13)
Guests can get more than their sense of sight going when taking a trip to the Honolulu State Art Museum thanks to Artizen by MW, which serves up a fine selection of dishes to complement the art with tantalizing tastes and aromas.
With sous chef Brandon Lee at the helm, Artizen has seen some pretty crafty dishes churned out for diners to try, plus much of the menu is locally sourced. Take for example the Mochi Crusted Opa Belly which is made with somen noodles, soy-yuzu kosho vinaigrette. It’s a savory and zesty dish that tickles taste buds while also satisfying appetites.
Other must-trys include the Seared Ahi Salad, made with fruikake crusted big eye tuna and Mari’s Gardens greens; the Smoked Marlin Club with marlin spread and bacon; or go classic with the Hawaiian Style Ahi Poke Bowl with farmers banchan and furikake rice. Artizen also has a breakfast menu available until 10:30 a.m. every day.
With the holidays in full effect, you might still be trying to find the perfect place to cater an event, or even an establishment to hold the event. Lee explains that Artizen is popular for hosting private events. “By booking with us you get access to the sculpture garden (weather permitting), which is really nice for families or ceremonies,” he says.

This golden stack is chef Brandon Lee’s take on the Japanese nanban chicken. At Artizen it is fried until super crispy then dunked into a vinegar soy dressing.
THE WORKS
Also occupying this mouth-watering sandwich is crisp shredded cabbage for a refreshing contrast and togarashi aioli on the bottom for a hint of added flavor.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST
Finally, the sandwich is finished with Artizen’s signature mentaiko tartar sauce and loaded up with a welcomed pile of crisp fries.
