Hanapepe is a small town on Kauai with lots of character. Right in the heart of it all is Unko’s Kitchen, a very popular restaurant that offers local comfort food options, just like your mom would make, at very reasonable prices. I can understand why there is a line out the door. Their signature dish, the Hunter special — which has their house-made smoked pork — is so delicious and full of flavor. Owners Manuel and Sharon Cabral only open the restaurant from 6 to 9 p.m. Fridays and 7 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, as they also have a thriving catering business. Their staff is mainly family and close friends, and they, too, have full time jobs during the week, which limits their hours that they can be open. I was lucky enough to sneak in on a busy Saturday afternoon to try a few of their popular dishes and talk story with “Unko Manno” as he shared what he loved most about his restaurant and the community of Hanapepe.
