By specializing in local Japanese comfort food over the past 89 years, Sekiya’s Restaurant & Delicatessen continues to please multiple generations of diners.
The popular cuisine was first introduced by Taisuke and Katsuko Sekiya in 1935 at Sekiya’s Kaimuki Avenue locale, just mauka of Kaimuki High School.
“We still make many of our items from scratch with the same recipes that have been perfected over the years,” Sekiya’s chef/ manager Leonard “Trey” Paresa says. “We love to see families and friends come and experience time here together. We’ve seen generations of people enjoy our food, coming as kids and then bringing their own kids in to eat.”
Marinated Fried Chicken ($15.65) is a go-to favorite throughout the day. Tender boneless chicken thigh fillets are marinated in Sekiya’s secret recipe blend, coated with potato starch, and fried until crispy and golden. The dish is served as a full meal with rice, miso soup and tsukemono.
Sukiyaki Udon ($19.25), meanwhile, is perfect for dinner. It’s prepared with chicken, beef or pork along with a delicious assortment of gobo, shiitake mushrooms, tofu, onions, watercress and udon. The savory soup is simmered in Sekiya’s signature dashi and finished with a poached egg — it’s enough for one person, or shared between two, as the full meal also comes with rice, miso soup and tsukemono.
For those seeking employment opportunities, Sekiya’s is currently hiring for all positions.
