If the Starship lyrics, “We built this city, we built this city on rock and roll” has you rockin’ your head back and forth just by reading it, then it’s more than likely you have some kind of appreciation for some good-old ‘80s pop rock.
Nearly 15 years following this Billboard-topper’s release, Lane Muraoka built a city of his own in the little islands of Hawaii — but his city was built on hard “work and roll.”
The Iolani alumnus, who started as a dishwasher in another restaurant at a young age, opened the first Big City Diner in Kaimuki just two years before the start of the 21st century. Not long after, the American-style diner featuring local favorites took the island by storm and became a favored island restaurant chain with a total of six locations across Oahu to date.
While his success is something to be proud of, it’s Muraoka’s humility that takes precedence as guests still can find him cleaning and serving within his restaurants alongside his staff, to whom he credits Big City’s success.
With Muraoka’s strong standards and exceptional employees, patrons can bet on wonderful customer service as well as quality food of generous portions.
Carry on the summer spirit with the diner and get your hands busy with Baby Back Ribs with our Famous Guava-BBQ Sauce. These glistening delights can be enjoyed as a “not so big slab” for $19.99 or as a “big slab” for $24.99.
The ribs’ mouthwatering guava-based sauce, made from scratch, includes bacon, onions, red wine, vinegar and brown sugar. Big City’s Guava BBQ sauce has grown so much in popularity that diners can purchase bottles of it to take home.
Mac & Cheese Burger ($15.99) provides a hefty bite that takes America’s classic combination, mac and cheese, and pairs it with a big-old hamburger topped with strips of bacon.
For those looking to go a little lighter than the aforementioned, Big City offers up several vibrant salads to choose from.
The Big City Cobb Salad ($14.99) is a colorful combination that is sure to satisfy, as it presents a rainbow of vegetables atop a bed of crisp lettuce.
Check out this “Big City” and your taste buds surely will rock out to these bomboocha bites and more.
