A CLOSER LOOK AT THIS WEEK’S HOUSE SPECIAL: DEAR DARLA SPECIALTY HAND-ROLLED PIZZA ($11.95)
The Little Rascals, presented in 1994, captured the hearts of a wide range of viewers from children to adults. A momentous scene from the movie included Alfalfa’s love letter to Darla. While Porky and Buckwheat narrated, “Dear Darla, I hate your stinkin’ guts!” the real letter (if you recall, Porky blew his nose into) read, “I can’t live without you … Your Romeo, Alfalfa.”
Now, what might this have to do with pizza? As the new kid on the block for a little over a year now, Yellow Cab Pizza Co. on Dillingham Boulevard also has won the hearts of diners of all ages. Its menu presents a slew of unique cuisine that holds a little bit of joyful quirkiness to it as well — enter, Dear Darla Specialty Hand-Rolled Pizza, coined after the beloved classic movie.
The two founders of the original Yellow Cab Pizza Co., established in the ‘90s in their native country of the Philippines, were not only fans of The Little Rascals, they also had a passion for travel. A visit to New York led to the inception of Yellow Cab as it was the founders’ favorite destination, from the big city’s lifestyle right down to its cuisine.
Yellow Cab’s Dillingham team is led by general manager Maly San Luis and branch manager Cheryl Macalutas (pictured here). Together, they roll out daily menu items such as Charlie Chan Chicken Pasta ($8.95) — a kung pao chicken inspired pasta, named after the fictitious detective character — and many other specials keeping hungry customers coming back for more. “For July Fourth we are doing a buy one pizza, get the second one (of equal or lesser value) 50 percent off,” shares San Luis. “Then, coming up at the end of the month we are doing a promo on wings for National Chicken Wing Day where (diners) can get 50-cent wings on July 29.”
Take a bite out of Yellow Cab’s menu in several ways — catering, online ordering, take-out, delivery (through Bite Squad, Uber Eats, Grubhub, and soon, DoorDash) or, of course, dine in at its festive location within the Costco Iwilei complex. Its enthusiastic team and array of eats will keep you and your whole gang of rascals fueled up and satisfied.
Roll on
This pizza is cut into long, thin slices, as diners are encouraged to place a little bit of the alfalfa sprouts and arugula on each slice before rolling them up into bite-size pieces.
Little treats
The Original Dear Darla is scattered with a bunch of flavorful ingredients such as mushrooms, olives, tomatoes, onions and pepperoni.
‘You are so beautiful to me’
Just as there were two versions of Alfalfa’s letter to Darla, there are two versions of this dish: Original (pictured here) or Ricotta Cheese and Roasted Garlic.
‘Hey, Alfalfa!’
Topping off this round dish is a bed of arugula and alfalfa sprouts, which stick out just like Alfalfa’s iconic hairdo in the movie.
