For nearly 80 years, Sekiya’s Restaurant and Delicatessen has offered up local favorites at what has become its iconic home on Kaimuki Avenue just mauka of Kaimuki High School. The eatery caters to a wide range of tastes, and makes it possible to enjoy a hearty bowl of udon noodles, some crispy french fries and a hot fudge sundae all in one sitting.
While Sekiya’s extensive menu features everything from classic burgers and sandwiches to traditional Japanese noodle offerings, the side dishes make perfect appetizers, whether enjoyed as a quick lunch, afternoon snack or dinner starter.
The Hash Tempura ($5.10 for six pieces, 85 cents for each additional piece) offers a unique take on corned beef hash. The flavorful meat mixture is deep-fried tempura-style in a golden batter to form bite-size morsels that appease any appetite.
Also popular are the multiple sushi dishes available at Sekiya’s, including the Inari (cone) Sushi ($1.35) and Nori Maki ($5.25) rolled sushi. These handheld favorites pair well with the multiple vegetable accompaniments available including the Kimpira Gobo ($5.25), braised burdock root, and Namasu ($3.55), an assortment of thinly sliced vegetables in rice vinegar.
Seikya’s also offers up an Okazu menu with a la carte items available deli style — the perfect way to snack or create a unique plate lunch. The Okazu items — which include selections such as sushi, noodles and tempura — are served daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the counter just as you enter the store.
