At Guava Smoked, marvelous meats are smoked to perfection with strawberry guava wood, also known as waiawi.
“We serve local favorites with a guava smoked twist,” says owner Scott Shibuya.
Spicy Pork is the number one smoked selection, “a little above medium heat, slightly sweet from the guava wood and tender and moist as can be,” describes Shibuya.
Two fish dishes — Butterfish Collars and Salmon Bellies — offer “fatty, Omega-3 goodness,” says Shibuya. Butterfish Collars tantalize the taste buds with a slight shoyu ginger flavor, and Salmon Bellies are Shibuya’s personal favorite — “a little salty, a little sweet, with the skin slightly charred for that extra crunch,” he says.
The Smoked Mixed Plate ($19.58) is the most popular plate lunch option — offering guests the opportunity to pick any two smoked items. Fried Rice ($2.39), Mac Salad ($1.43), Kimchi ($1.43) and other options are satiating sides that can be added.
Smoked Pork Loco Moco ($18.15) is another mouthwatering menu item. Smoked pork is ground into a patty and topped with white gravy and an egg-your-way.
Established in 2011, Guava Smoked now has three convenient locations in industrial Kalihi, on Kapahulu Avenue in Honolulu and at Pearlridge Center in Aiea.
The Pearlridge location opened in August 2022 and is “fully accessible with tons of parking and air conditioning for those hot summer days,” says Shibuya.
The Kapahulu location is the place to party with live music from the Subpoenas every other Friday (next is July 14) and the capacity to host private parties for up to 90 people.
