Matsu ($48.75)

For dinner and a show, visit Tanaka of Tokyo. The restaurant specializes in combining authentic Japanese teppanyaki with entertainment and a local twist.

“We promise you will leave our restaurants with an experience unlike any other,” says vice president Bo Tanaka. “Expect to have a night full of laughter and entertainment, and to leave with a full belly.”

A popular menu item is the Matsu ($48.75), which includes sirloin steak, teriyaki chicken glazed in house- made sauce and a cold-water lobster tail.

“We serve only certified angus beef and the chicken that comes with this course is absolute perfection,” Tanaka shares.

Seafood Combination ($43.75)

Tanaka of Tokyo’s Seafood Combination ($43.75) includes scallops, calamari, lobster and salmon. Tanaka recommends guests also try its famous Garlic Fried Rice ($5.25), so that patrons can see the chefs perform bowl and egg juggling tricks as the dish is created.

The locally owned restaurant features sauces and dressings that are prepared fresh every day. Each meal comes with a salad, miso soup, grilled shrimp and vegetable appetizers, plus rice and green tea. For dessert, diners can choose from five flavors of Dave’s Ice Cream.

In addition to an entertaining meal, customers can rest assured that it’ll be a safe dining experience, too.

“We are excited to share that every inch of air in Tanaka of Tokyo is vented out by our powerful exhaust system and replaced by fresh outside air every 2 minutes,” Tanaka says. “We are the safest dining room in Hawaii!”

Tanaka’s father opened the eatery in 1978, and there are currently three locations in Honolulu. The Waikiki Shopping Plaza restaurant, which is its very first location, is celebrating its 44th anniversary this month.
