Like the majority of local restaurants, Tanaka of Tokyo endured a turbulent year. However, vice president Bo Tanaka is elated to announce that all three locations — Kalakaua Avenue, Ala Moana Boulevard and Kaiulani Avenue — have opened their doors once again.
“The past year has been such a wild ride for us and … the fact that we have survived thus far is due to the wonderful leadership of our president Hiroshi Lamansky, and the financial wizardry of our CFO Calvin Yamasaki,” shares Tanaka. “Hiroshi took over the role of president right at the start of the pandemic and we could not have chosen a better man for the job. His leadership and enthusiasm have brought us back to almost pre-pandemic sales levels. Words are inadequate to describe his dedication and determination.
“We are also grateful to our hardworking staff and our loyal customers who have helped to support us and to keep us going. Prior to the pandemic, 60% of our business came from Japanese and foreign visitors, and it is incredible to see so many locals and mainland visitors supporting us.
“We are also pleased to say that al most all of our staff have been fully vaccinated, making our dining rooms very safe. We can’t wait to safely serve you and your ohana.”
The eatery’s East location reopened recently in OHANA Waikiki East Hotel by Outrigger, and is the only location with open-air dining. It also features Evo smart grills, which filter smoke and other air particles to emit clean, fresh air, according to Tanaka, who adds that the Surf and Turf Lobster and Filet ($49.75) is a secret menu item at this location only, and features a Certified Angus Beef filet and cold-water lobster tail.
At all locations, however, diners can opt for the Australian AA7 Wagyu, which encompasses 8 ounces of flavor-packed steak for $75.50. And, the famous and fresh Garlic Fried Rice ($5.25) is a fan favorite, and prepared on the teppanyaki grill before your eyes.
