The icing on the cake

A CLOSER LOOK AT THIS WEEK’S HOUSE SPECIAL: CUSTOM ORDER VEGAN CAKES ($125-$150)

Mahina & Sun’s continues to call to taste buds and this time it’s with the addition of custom order vegan cakes made by executive chef Nani Keaulana-Kuloloia. The cakes are fully vegan, organic and made with locally sourced ingredients. Keaulana-Kuloloia makes each order from scratch and her talents surely shine in the cakes’ topnotch flavor and beautiful decor.

Keaulana-Kuloloia, who made a life change to eat and cook more vegan-based foods (and loves doing so), says the cakes are just as tasty as non-vegan cakes, and are good for the consumer, too — being that they are healthier and contain less sugar. Since adding a vegan diet to her eating habits, Keaulana-Kuloloia mentions she is able to keep her weight maintained and is full of more energy.

With that, she says Mahina & Sun’s will be adding more vegan, vegetarian, organic and gluten-free options. The result is more choice for diners, from strict vegans to others who seek adding some cleaner eating to their diets.

ome cleaner eating to their diets. In the meantime, guests of Mahina & Sun’s can dive into a menu that also offers seafood and protein selections. Keaulana-Kuloloia highly recommends bringing family and friends down to enjoy Mahina’s Family Feast ($37 per guest, plus fish market price) that comes with nine different dishes, including a favorite: Whole Deep Sea Snapper.

For something smaller, diners can opt for meals off the breakfast, brunch or dinner menus.

VERY STRAWBERRY

The cake is topped with fresh strawberries and fried basil leaves, which help to preserve the green color.

THINK PINK

This pretty frosting is made up of vegan butter, sugar, strawberries and basil, all of which are organic.

BATTER MATTERS

The batter of this three-layer cake is loaded with organic goodness including the fl our, sugar and vegan butter, just to name a few.

ALL ABOUT THAT ‘BASE’

All of the vegan cakes have a base of banana or apple sauce, which gives them their extremely moist consistency. Call the restaurant to put your orders in. Prices vary by order.

LEMON LILIKOI

The bright and beautiful cake is decorated with fresh, cut lemon, and crowned with lemon zest and edible flowers.

HAUPIA COCONUT

The coconut milk in this cake is fresh squeezed by hand and is blanketed by organic coconut flakes.
