A CLOSER LOOK AT THIS WEEK’S HOUSE SPECIAL: SEAFOOD CHIRASHI SET MEAL ($27.75, AVAILABLE DURING LUNCH)

The New Year is just 24 days away, and it’s time for tradition to take over at full speed. In Japanese culture, this means gearing up for Osechi sets, which Rinka has just for you.

Osechi are traditional New Year food to be eaten on Jan. 1. They are vast, colorful and beautifully arranged with each food and ingredient signifying a deep meaning, from good health to happiness and long life.

At Rinka, they are available now, through reservations. Pick ups will be on Tuesday, Dec. 31 between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Rinka’s Queen Street location. The larger box, for three to five people is $500 plus tax and the smaller box for one to two people is $300 plus tax.

It’s also a good idea to stop in and enjoy Rinka, on any other day as well. Its refined menu offers a plethora of authentic and fresh Japanese cuisine. Options include Sashimi Deluxe Combination, Wagyu Sir-loin Teppan — that is grilled right at the dining table — and more. Also, break the chain of your usual go-to and try out the Beef Tongue Curry Soup that is served in a warm and soft bread bowl.

For small bites, in preparation for the main meal to come, a popular order is the Cheese Fishcake with Seaweed Tempura. It is an enjoyable finger food packed with big flavor.

SUPER SLURPIN’

The set comes with warm and soothing udon in a savory broth topped with fishcake, egg and seaweed.

MM, MM GOOD!

Chawanmushi is also a part of this meal comprising a savory egg custard pudding with shrimp, fishcake and mushroom.

SWEET ACCOMPANIMENTS

Two sides of fried tofu and pickled vegetables bring this meal together serving as nice breaks in between bites of the main meal.

TAKING THE SPOTLIGHT

The star of this show is in the Seafood Chirashi bowl that contains fresh ahi, chutoro, salmon, whelks, herring roe, yellowtail, shrimp and egg atop a bed of rice.
