Dining with JORDAN SEGUNDO

Many people know Jordan Segundo as Hawaii’s first American Idol finalist. Today, the young star has added to his success as a professional broadcast journalist, first in Hawaii, then to California where he is now on CBS 13’s morning show from 5 to 7 a.m. and then again on Good Day Sacramento.

He’s back home in the islands this week for the Young at Heart Expo to take place at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall on Sept. 21-22. In addition to performing for the crowd, he will also take to the catwalk — or should we say “petwalk” — with 50 other celebrities and VIPs in The Celebrities and Their Pets Fashion Show scheduled for the two-day event at noon.

To fuel up before taking the strut, Segundo is sure to stop into his favorite spot: Ruth’s Chris Steak House. Get the inside scoop on his desired dishes and check it out for yourself with your next stop into the elegant restaurant.

AL: Why is Ruth’s Chris your favorite restaurant?

JS: I have always loved steak, that’s the one thing even as a kid I enjoyed the most. Steak is a meal that is a special thing that has to be prepared a certain way, so Ruth’s Chris has always been my favorite steakhouse to enjoy their ribeye — they know how to prepare their steak! The steak is drenched in sizzling butter letting off a delicious aroma. Each bite is so tender and flavorful, it’s the perfectly cooked steak in my opinion.

AL: What other menu items do you enjoy?

JS: My birthday three years ago is the first time I tried the sweet potato casserole and thought, ‘What is this? It’s amazing! It’s sweet and had cinnamon topping over it — I’ve never tried that anywhere else.’ I also love the crab cakes. I am a seafood and steak kind of guy and Ruth’s Chris crab cakes have lots of fresh crabmeat, it’s so delicious. There are a lot of great steak houses in Hawaii, but Ruth’s Chris is the first one I ever went to and the memory has stayed with me all of these years.

AL: What do you love most about your current job?

JS: I like that I get to do both news and feature stories. Good Day Sacramento is a well-known show there and audiences love it. They love the cast members and I’m known as the new guy from Hawaii. Every Friday, I do an Aloha Friday segment that includes teaching viewers Hawaiian words, pidgin words and local Hawaii customs to share the aloha spirit.
