It might be hard to believe, but the now-ubiquitous L&L Hawaiian Barbecue restaurants began as a dairy on Liliha Street that served plate lunches.
Founders Johnson Kam and Eddie Flores have been growing the restaurant since 1976, when they started turning the first restaurant into an island-wide chain. In 1999, they took that expansion further — around the country, and then around the world. Now there are nearly 200 L&Ls internationally, including in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Japan, as well as many Mainland states.
Part of what has given L&L such staying power in a variety of markets, according to director of marketing Brandon Dela Cruz, has been its “unique flavor profile” and “reliability in getting a good hearty meal for a good price.
“L&L’s food is the quintessential food that is familiar to Hawaii: the plate lunch,” he continues. “It is the Asian and American fusion of flavors that mirrors Hawaii’s cultural heritage yet has grown to become a flavor all its own and recognized throughout the world as ‘Hawaiian Barbecue.'”
