A tasty temptation of ‘tenpura’

According to president Tom Jones, the correct pronunciation of tempura is actually ten- pu-ra. Although when said smoothly, the transition of the “n” and “p” blend to make an “m” sound, which is why it has been written that way by non-Japanese speakers for a long time. Originating in Portugal, tenpura was later introduced to Japan in Naga- sakiinthemid-16thcentury. Gyotaku honors this rich his- tory with a couple of its own tenpura specials.
“Gyotaku is so well known for its tenpura,” says Jones. “We sell more tenpura than any other item on the menu.”
