Where Locals Go to Grind

Tucked away at the end of a small shopping center along Nimitz Highway sits New Eagle Cafe, a place residents have turned to for almost two decades for some of Oahu’s most celebrated island favorites. From Hawaiian cuisine to Filipino- and Korean-inspired classics, the eatery boasts an impressively diverse menu ideal for any appetite.

With a history dating back to the 1960s, New Eagle Cafe has become a culinary institution. “I would honestly assess that more than 99 percent of our clientele are locals from the island,” says restaurant owner Tae Im. “Being that we are located a little off the beaten path, away from Waikiki, over time the eatery has transitioned into a sanctuary for locals to enjoy the best of what the island has to offer.”

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, New Eagle Cafe is equal parts diner and rustic eatery, serving everything from specialty sandwiches to seafood and steak combinations and Japanese-style teishoku bento sets.

Early risers should try Macadamia Nut Pancake Combo ($9.55), which features a generous portion of the restaurant’s homemade pancakes elevated by chopped pieces of macadamia nut mixed into the batter and sprinkled on top as garnish.

“The nuts give the pancakes a great crunchy texture, which we balance with our in-house coconut cream syrup,” explains Im. “The combo also comes with an egg and your choice of sausage links, Portuguese sausage, smoked ham, luncheon meat, bacon, Spam or homemade hamburger patty.”

For a quick, satisfying lunch on the go, Reuben Sandwich ($11.50) is a hearty choice served with thick, succulent slices of pastrami, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut. The sandwich comes on Rye bread witha choice of macaroni salad, tossed salad or french fries.

Additionally, loyal customers recently rejoiced when New Eagle Cafe received its long awaited liquor license, opening the way for diners to order from a variety of bottled beer and red wine to enjoy with stand-out entrees, such as the famous Roasted Prime Rib of Beef ($19.25) served with au jus, hot vegetables and a choice of starch.

With the holiday season here before we know it, diners can look forward to another special. “Starting in December, the eatery will designate certain days of the month in which customers can receive a free trip on the trolley tour to visit Honolulu City Lights,” says Im. “It’s a great way to encourage families to get together both in and out of the restaurant.”
