Asahi debuts new dishes for patrons

If you’re craving local home-style comfort food, but don’t have the time or energy to cook it yourself, Asahi Grill on Ward Avenue is the place to go.

The locally owned and operated ohana-style restaurant is casual and family-friendly. Known for its mix of local and Japanese fare, the menu is constantly expanding, giving customers — many who are regulars — more reasons to keep coming back.

Among the restaurant’s recently released dishes is Asahi Ramen ($7.95), featuring classic ramen in a flavorful shoyu-based broth, topped with choy sum, egg, kamaboko, green onion and two pieces of beef won ton.

Also new and not yet on the menu is Kalua Pork and Cabbage ($9.50), prepared in an original homemade sauce and served with macaroni salad or tossed salad and two scoops of brown or white rice.

Adobo Fried Rice ($8.75) also has been very popular, as it’s made with chef Clifford Doctolera’s homemade pork adobo mixed with Asahi Grill’s signature fried rice, which includes Portuguese sausage, egg and green onion.

Of course, longtime favorites such as the eatery’s famous Oxtail Soup from the old Kapiolani Coffee Shop is still available, along with its menu of ramen, donburi, curry, hamburger steak, loco moco, chopped steak, shrimp tempura, butterfish and more.

The restaurant is conveniently open from 6:30 a.m. and stays open late. There also is a breakfast menu served until 11 a.m. (Banana Pancakes made with fresh bananas and mixed with homemade pancake batter is a must-try). Asahi Grill also offers catering, takeout orders and free parking.
