New Eagle Cafe Soars to New Heights

Back in 1960, patrons who flocked to Eagles Cafe in downtown Honolulu’s Blaisdell Hotel on Fort Street could sit down to a New York Cut Sirloin Steak with French Fries for just $2.25.

While times have certainly changed over the 50-plus years since, diners can still find the same quality food and affordable prices at New Eagle Cafe. The popular eatery currently resides in Nimitz Center, conveniently situated along Nimitz Highway in the heart of one of Honolulu’s bustling business districts. Owner Tae Im took over operations last November, and continues the restaurant’s rich legacy of serving stellar local favorites while providing excellent customer service. The restaurateur is well aware of the rich history New Eagle Cafe has established through more than 80 years in Honolulu, and still possesses one of the restaurant’s vintage menus — it’s so old that the phone number back then was composed of just five digits.

“I definitely want to continue the tradition of the restaurant, and carry the torch so to speak,” Im says, when describing New Eagle Cafe, which specializes in local comfort food made fresh to order.

Im and the friendly staff at New Eagle Cafe have extended breakfast service by an additional hour, from 8 a.m. Monday through Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday and Sunday until noon daily. Tasty new dishes also grace the breakfast menu just in time for summer, including Macadamia Nut Pancakes with Coconut Cream Syrup ($5.95 for one piece, $6.95 for two pieces and $7.95 for three pieces). The fluffy hotcakes are topped with rich, chopped macadamia nuts and smothered with sweet, savory syrup.

“It’s a trend now for restaurants to offer ‘off-the-wall’ breakfast items, so I wanted to switch things up,” Im explains. “We just introduced Macadamia Nut Pancakes a few weeks ago, and it’s been very popular so far.”

Strawberry Belgian Waffle ($6.95) satisfies the senses as the large, golden brown waffle is topped with a hearty portion of whipped cream and fresh strawberries. For an extra $2, diners can make the meal a combo with the addition of an egg and choice of link or Portuguese sausage, smoked ham, luncheon meat, bacon, Spam or homemade hamburger patty.

Another breakfast mainstay, French Toast ($5.75), also is popular among loyal diners. The buttery delight is topped off with powdered sugar and signifies a special treat to start the day.

A host of local favorites grace the breakfast menu, including Breakfast Loco Moco ($8.65). The island-style concoction features a large, homemade hamburger patty over a hearty bed of rice all smothered in gravy and topped with two eggs.

Those looking for a healthier option to begin the day, may reach for Grilled Miso Butterfish ($11.25), one of New Eagle Cafe’s Japanese Breakfast combos. The fresh fish is accompanied by miso soup, tsukemono, tossed salad and rice.

“This is a traditional Asian breakfast for those who may prefer something that’s not so greasy or heavy,” Im says. “It’s a very healthy alternative for those looking to stay away from a lot of fat or sugar.”
