Located in the 808 Center, MIAN Honolulu has been serving patrons authentic Sichuan-style cuisine since it first opened in 2019. Recognized for its delectable food, excellent service and friendly staff, MIAN takes pride in its modern take on classic dishes that are made using only the freshest and highest-quality ingredients.
MIAN Honolulu, which is named after the Chinese word for noodle, is the sister restaurant of Chengdu Taste and is known for its housemade tender noodles. Customers can choose from four types: fresh house, thin round, rice and sweet potato.
Here, MIAN Honolulu manager Pony Xu shares more information about the restaurant’s history, bestselling items and more.
DO: Give us a brief history about MIAN.
PX: MIAN serves authentic Sichuan-style noodles and traditional dishes in four lively locations across Southern California. MIAN is the brainchild of James Beard Award-nominated chef Tony Xu, who rose to culinary fame with the opening of his first restaurant, Chengdu Taste, in the San Gabriel Valley in 2013. Five years later, our MIAN family — which includes a team of tight-knit chefs who have been mentored by Xu — continues to offer a gateway to authentic Sichuan-style food for customers across the U.S. and in Honolulu.
DO: What sets MIAN Honolulu apart?
PX: We pay homage to the distinctly delicious — and tongue-numbing — cuisine of China’s Sichuan province. Our menu is anchored by the bold, pungent and spicy flavors for which the region is known and revered.
DO: What are some of MIAN’s bestselling dishes?
PX: The House Beef Noodles ($15.50) is our most popular dish. It features a beef-bone-based broth steeped in Chinese spices and a Sichuan bean paste chile oil and is served with Chongqing-style noodles, cubed beef stew and bok choy in a secret housemade sauce, before being topped with green onions and coriander. Our Pork Dumplings ($13.99) combine a tender minced-meat pork filling with sweet and sour sauce. We also use our homemade soybean sauce to make it extra special. MIAN’s Chengdu Zajiang Noodles ($12.99) is another bestseller and showcases our noodles with stewed ground pork, a fried egg and bok choy. Meanwhile, the Pork Belly Stew Rice Bowl ($13.99) highlights MIAN’s pork belly cooked in a rich broth that creates a melt-in-your-mouth texture. The Beef Rolls ($6.99) are also delicious and showcases our marinated sliced beef wrapped with a crispy flour coat.
DO: What are some unique items that can be found on the menu?
PX: Our House Pickled Cucumbers ($6.99) are homemade and marinated, which give the dish a sour and sweet taste. It can be found in the appetizer section of our menu, along with many other seasonal vegetables.
DO: What’s your favorite dish on the menu?
PX: The House Beef Noodles because the soup base flavor is rich and has a unique Sichuan style, which is a both a little bit spicy and savory.
DO: Does the biz have any current specials?
PX: We still have Xiaolong Pao ($13.99), or soup dumplings, on the menu.
It comes with eight pieces, and each one is handmade with care and precision to bring customers the best flavors.
DO: Do you have any “pro tips” when dining at MIAN?
PX: Order noodles, an appetizer and some add-ons to make it a good combination. My favorite combination is House Beef Noodles, a side order of Zajiang and House Pickled Cucumbers.
DO: What message do you have to share with our readers?
PX: We look forward to welcoming you in and introducing you to flavors that you’ll crave for a lifetime with our authentic Sichuan cuisine.
