Breadfruit, also known as ulu, is a food enjoyed by many across the Aloha State, and chip shop Ulu Mana has transformed this simple ingredient into a salty treat.
“I love creating products that people really enjoy,” says owner Loren Shoop. “I love seeing the excitement on people’s faces when they come into our store and start to discover all of our unique products.”
In addition to ulu, the business’s chips are also crafted from cassava and sweet potato. Its Fresh Ulu Chips ($30 for 1 pound; $8.49 for a 3 1/2-ounce bag) are thinly sliced before being dipped in coconut oil and fried. They come in multiple flavors such as regular salt, garlic salt, cool lime, churro chip and ranch. The Cassava Chips ($30 for 1 pound; $8.49 for a 4-ounce bag) come in the same flavors and “are perfect for work, a special gathering or just to snack on at home,” according to Shoop. However, Ulu Mana doesn’t only focus on chips.
“They need to taste our fresh chips and sample our Hawaiian Hummus ($8.49 for 8 ounces) — hummus made from ulu rather than garbanzo beans,” Shoop says. “We also carry hundreds of locally made snacks from other small makers like ourself.”
These snacks are included in the company’s unique gift-packaging service, which Ulu Mana looks forward to growing.
“The Ulu chip factory is the best place to find our chip and hummus products,” Shoop says.
Customers who bring in this article or mention “FRESH10” will receive a 10% discount off all ulu and cassava chips. The promotion ends on July 31.
