In honor of National Taco Day on Oct. 4, Dining Out is pleased to feature one of Oahu’s best taco joints: Alejandro’s Mexican Food.
With locations in Kalihi Valley, Pearl City and Honolulu on Kapahulu Avenue, any thirst for tacos can be easily met — along with many other authentic Mexican meals made from scratch with inspiration from founder Alejandro Alvarado’s childhood meals.
There are four mouthwatering meats to choose from when chowing down on tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos and other popular plates: ground beef, carnitas (slow-cooked pork with a crispy grilled finish), carne asada (steak) and shredded chicken (sautéed with onions, bell peppers, tomatoes and garlic).
National Taco Day conveniently falls on a Tuesday, coinciding with Taco Tuesday, during which a la carte tacos are 50 cents off regular menu prices (beef $3.25; carnitas $3.25; chicken $3.75; carne asada $4).
Craving a complete taco meal? The Taco Combo Plate ($13.50 to $16, depending on meat) offers three tacos along with rice, beans and a drink.
Not in the mood for tacos but still want to celebrate with another Mexican meal? A popular plate is the Wet Burrito Combo ($13.50 to $15.50, depending on meat), a huge burrito smothered in homemade red enchilada sauce, cheese, and sour cream with sides of rice and beans.
Nachos ($10, plus additional for meat) are another great option, complete with cheese, beans, onions, cilantro, salsa verde, pico de gallo, jalapeños, sour cream and black olives.
“Come for the food and stay for the good times!” exclaims Alvarado.
