Soft serve biz is big on flavor

As a family-operated local company specializing in 100% premium dairy-free soft serve and treats, Niu Soft Serve is truly home sweet home.

Co-owner Kekahu Napoleon-Ahn explains that the business launched in 2020 following a year of research and development. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Niu Soft Serve team began showcasing its products at farmers markets and gained popularity by offering islandwide delivery service.

“Through our deliveries, we grew in popularity and were able to flourish during the pandemic and build,” Napoleon-Ahn says. “We continued at the farmers markets, while doing other special events and catering.”

After establishing its first official storefront in 2021 at the since-closed Ohana Hale Marketplace, it was clear that a brick-and-mortar location was feasible, and Niu Soft Serve Parlour was born. Earlier this year, its new store opened in Moiliili much to the delight of guests who enjoy innovative menu creations, including vegan malted shakes.

Hot Kulolo Sundae ($8.50)

Niu Soft Serve is known for its Hot Kulolo Sundae ($8.50), which features a twist of Niu and ube soft serve topped with the signature hot kulolo sauce and freshly roasted macadamia nuts.

“Aside from everything in our shop being dairy-free and vegan, our hot kulolo sauce has become a staple item on the menu. Just imagine thick hot fudge, but instead, it’s kulolo,” Napoleon-Ahn says.

Niu’s Malted Shakes ($8.50 each) are handcrafted with vegan malted powder, and popular flavors of the week include lychee and pandan.
