It’s seven years and counting for Hawaii’s Favorite Kitchens, which is conveniently located right next door to another local mainstay — the original Rainbow Drive-In.
“You can get a taste of a wide variety of foods that represent Hawaii,” says owner Chris Iwamura. “The inspiration for HFK was to create a place that highlighted and served different local favorites in one place.”
Fans of Rainbow Drive-In, Hawaii’s Favorite Kitchens’ sister company, will enjoy the HFK Mix Plate ($11.75). It comes with your choice of one Rainbow Drive-In entrée and Rainbow’s rotisserie chicken, as well as poke, all over a bed of rice. Expect a scoop of mac salad and steamed veggies to accompany the feast.
“(It’s a) great way to try different items on one plate,” says Iwamura.
The KC Waffle Dog ($3.95), meanwhile, is a simple local favorite. This item features a hot dog coated with a slightly sweet batter and cooked in a waffle iron until the edges are crispy. It’s served with a side of special yellow sauce.
Favoring something sweet? Opt for a Shimazu shave ice ($6, small) that comes with three flavor choices. It’s the perfect way to end a meal or cool off after a day at the beach or long hike.
There’s so much variety to choose from, but ask Iwamura what his go-to is, and he knows right off the bat.
“I personally enjoy our poke bowls,” he says. “My favorite pokes are the Garlic Ahi Poke and our new Korean Shrimp Poke.”
