Find the best gourmet popcorn at Island Popper — behind O’Reilly Auto Parts in Kalihi — where non-GMO kernels are cooked to perfection in 100 percent coconut oil with no preservatives. All of the biz’s gourmet popcorn is made from scratch daily, and bags are filled to order, which means the freshest snacks with the boldest flavors any day of the week. Popular items include the Tsunami Mix (original furikake, organic butter and kakimochi), Maui Mix (caramel and real cheddar cheese), and the Big Island Mix (caramel, original furikake and organic butter). Adventurous eaters can try their hand at the weekly rotating flavors, like the Buffalo Ranch variety that’ll be featured this week.
“(It’s) the spicy tangy flavors that you know and love as a crunchy popcorn snack,” explains owner Andrea Tournis-Vagenas, who adds that there’s free reserved parking in front of the shop.
In honor of National Popcorn Day (Jan. 19), Island Popper will hold a weeklong celebration. During Jan. 18-23, for every purchase, customers will receive a free cup of popcorn!
The fun doesn’t stop there, though. Guests still have a chance to guess how much kakimochi is in a jar — find it on Island Popper’s Instagram (@islandpopper) or at its location on Colburn Street — for a chance to win a Netflix gift card and popcorn, of course! A winner will be picked when the shop closes at 6 p.m. Jan. 19.
