Mapunapuna eatery energizes the local plate lunch scene

Trust Us Special ($18, or $19.50 with Krazy Rice)

Back in 2013, business owners Miles Oyasato and Ty Takishita opened Kau Kau Grill in the bustling industrial neighborhood of Mapunapuna with their aim set squarely on increasing the choices available within the local plate lunch scene.

Boasting some mouthwatering new flavor combinations, the restaurant quickly became a hit among customers. The eatery also piles the plate lunches high with generous portions, so appetites are satiated.

Pulehu Beef Short Ribs and Spicy Ahi Poke Combo ($20, or $21.50 with Krazy Rice)

Kau Kau Grill gets high marks from patrons for its dishes chock full of made inhouse entrees like Garlic Ahi and more. Plates also include rice and tossed salad or the famed macaroni salad made with spaghetti noodles.

One unique signature item at the eatery is the beloved spicy Krazy Rice, which is flavored with the eatery’s in-house barbecue sauce, a special spice blend, tidbits of pulled rib ends and onions.

A great plate that customers can dive into is the Trust Us Special ($18, or $19.50 with Krazy Rice), a delicious choice that features scrumptious barbecue baby back ribs and the eatery’s juicy garlic shrimp.

Fried Saimin and Teri Chicken Combo ($15, or $16.50 with Krazy Rice)

Another tasty choice is the Fried Saimin Combo, shown with Teri Chicken ($15, or $16.50 with Krazy Rice). Sink your teeth into these delectable noodles mixed with green onion and fishcake. In this plate, Kau Kau Grill uses skinless, boneless thighs that are carefully marinated in a special teriyaki flavor and seasonings before being expertly grilled.

Customers can also opt for Pulehu Beef Short Ribs and Spicy Ahi Poke Combo ($20, or $21.50 with Krazy Rice). These Pulehu Beef Short Ribs are marinated slowly in a homemade preparation and then perfectly grilled to order. The fresh poke has an excellent texture and a nice balanced flavor to it.
