Veteran restaurateur Don Murphy continues to give back to the local community, and his namesake Murphy’s Bar & Grill is teaming up with Oahu Swim Academy at the eighth Annual Turkey Tailgate Donation Drive on Nov. 21.
From 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the Thursday prior to Thanksgiving, Murphy’s Bar & Grill will collect turkeys, non-perishable food items and monetary donations to help Hawaii Foodbank feed local families for the holiday.
“Last year, we collected more than 1,500 pounds of food through our annual Turkey Tailgate Donation Drive,” said Murphy, owner of Murphy’s Bar & Grill, which has served the local community for more than 30 years. “We hope to exceed that amount this year, so individuals, families and seniors can have their very own happy Thanksgivings.”
Community members are encouraged to drop off donations to Murphy’s at the corner of Merchant Street and Nuuanu Avenue in downtown Honolulu. Donations will be collected and food items will be placed in a refrigerated truck and delivered to Hawaii Foodbank for distribution to families in need.
“Murph is a true community hero, always going above and beyond to help those in need,” said Hawaii Foodbank president and CEO Ron Mizutani. “We’re so grateful for his team’s continued efforts in support of Hawaii’s hungry.”
As an added incentive, Murphy’s Bar & Grill will provide a $5 food and beverage voucher for every turkey donated during its tailgate party that evening from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Additionally, The Oahu Swim Academy will provide a free private swim lesson and goggles (valued at $42) for donations of five turkeys or more.
Murphy’s Bar & Grill will only accept donations on Nov. 21 during the designated drop-off window, and all other donations may be made to Hawaii Foodbank during operating hours. For more information on Hawaii Foodbank or Murphy’s donation drive, visit hawaiifoodbank.org or call 836-3600.
