When it comes to kaiten-zushi — rotation sushi — Genki Sushi remains a go-to choice for many islanders. The restaurant has several locations throughout the state, and many of them now offer the double-rail, train sushi delivery configuration for convenient, ultra-fast ordering. As part of the train-ordering process, diners can place orders via an updated, lightweight touch-screen panel and receive their sushi at their table.
Yet as fun as it is to sit down and pick and choose from an array of tantalizing varieties of sushi passing by on a conveyor belt, sometimes you just want to grab something and go. Genki still has you covered.
“We introduced bento at the Ward location a couple years back,” says David Moon, director of purchasing and operations for Genki Sushi. “For a while only Ward had them … then the Kapahulu location. Now all Hawaii Genki Sushis offer bento.”
From a basic menu, you can create their own bento to tantalize their taste buds. First, select one fried dish as the entree, either Chicken Karaage, Garlic Chicken, Chicken Katsu or Karaage Squid. Then select two sushi items. Choices include Inari, California Roll, Kappa Maki, Ume Maki, Oshinko Maki and Kanpyo Maki. All bento are $7.99, but for an additional $1.50, you can add either Ahi Poke or Spicy Tuna. “At under $10, the price is very reasonable,” Moon says.
If you crave a sampling of some of the different types of sushi Genki has to offer, a set is a good option. Genki Set 1 ($16.50) is a hearty selection with 10 assorted pieces including Spicy Tuna, Ika, Tako, Tobiko and Tamago. Genki Set 3 ($24.50) is a generous collection that includes Ebi, Unagi, Salmon, Spicy Tuna, Tamago and Inari.
Genki Sushi also offers a 10-percent discount for military members and seniors ages 55 and older. The discount is available Sunday through Thursday on dine-in orders only, and as a reminder, diners must show valid photo identification; this offer may not be combined with any other discounts or promotions.
