Yesterday was National Bacon Day, and there’s no better place for a belated celebration than at Pancakes & Waffles B.L.D. (breakfast, lunch and dinner) — which offers several bacon-inspired dishes every day of the year.
With a name like Pancakes & Waffles, it should come as no surprise the eatery offers a Bacon Waffle ($9.95). “This is our Belgian waffle with whole strips of bacon baked inside,” says Juli Sung, who owns the restaurant with her husband, Jason. “All our waffles can be customized so some people get really creative and add chocolate chips and whipped cream for a sweet and savory combo!”
Bacon and eggs are an American breakfast staple, and Pancakes & Waffles takes it up a notch with Loaded Potato Omelette ($10.75). This four-egg omelette is filled with lots of bacon, cheese, potatoes and sour cream. It is served with choice of rice, home fries, toast or pancakes. “It’s one of my personal favorites because all the fillings go so well together,” Sung says.
Even without National Bacon Day, now is the perfect time to visit the Kalihi location of Pancakes & Waffles. They were closed for renovations through much of 2018, but the end result it was worth the wait. The revamped restaurant has expanded by about 1,000 additional feet and added new seating and wall decorations.
NOT JUST FOR BREAKFAST
A popular special at Pancakes & Waffles is the Kalbi Bacon Steak ($12.95). A thick cut pork belly slab is soaked in an in-house kalbi marinade and grilled. It is served with rice and a choice of mac salad, potato salad or spring mix salad. “I have no doubt bacon lovers will fall in love with this dish,” Sung says. “Our kalbi bacon steak will make you understand the meaning of ‘crazy good!’ I have been told many times, ‘This is the best thing I’ve ever had!’ It is literally bacon taken to another level.”
