When you have an appetite that won’t settle for anything less than endless plates of sushi, seafood, and other delectable treats, head for Kaku’s Sushi and Seafood Buffet.
One of the newest tenants at International Market Place, Kaku’s is the latest venture of Kaku Makino, founder of Todai, the upscale chain that once boasted more than 30 locations all over the world. Operated by Makino himself, and a team of world-class Japanese chefs, Kaku’s bills itself as “the only gourmet Japanese sushi and seafood buffet in town.”
Place your sushi and sashimi orders before heading to the buffet line. Kaku’s glorious cornucopia includes shrimp and vegetable tempura, baked oysters, garlic shrimp, and clams, as well as mouthwatering pupus, authentic Japanese salads, hot entrees, and delectable desserts. At dinnertime, made-to-order steak, prime rib, crab legs, raw oysters on the half-shell and cocktail shrimp are added to the bounty. Kids of all ages will be delighted to see a chocolate fountain.
A trio of wines are available by the glass ($6) or bottle ($24), and a few beers, including draft Asahi, are offered (all beers are $6). There are also a half dozen sake selections, including Hakutsuru Draft Namasake ($6) and Hizo Otokoyama Kokubetsu Junmai ($18). Mai-tais, pina coladas and margaritas are available for just $7.
Lunch, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m., is only $25 for adults, and dinner, 5:30-9:30 p.m., is $50 for adults — generous kamaaina discounts are available with ID. Children ages 4-12 are charged half-price for lunch and dinner. Validated parking at the International Marketplace is free for the first hour, and only $2 for the second hour. Reservations are recommended.
