From its humble 2002 beginnings in a former garage on Nuuanu Avenue, Bangkok Chef has expanded to five eateries — Nuuanu, Moiliili, Ewa Beach, Iwilei and Manoa — thanks to a menu of authentic Thai classics. “We don’t over-do our food, we don’t make it fancy,” says owner Patrick Chang. “It’s straight out, simple food.” A perfect example is the Chicken Larb ($9.95). Minced chicken is seasoned with fish sauce and lime juice, then mixed with roasted ground rice, mint leaves, red onions, green onions and cilantro. This medium-spicy dish is served with cabbage on a bed of lettuce.
Sumptuous Salad
Papaya salad is a staple of Thai cuisine. Bangkok Chef’s Papaya Salad ($9.95) is moderately spicy and features shredded green papaya, tomatoes, long beans, garlic, peanuts and chili peppers mixed with house tangy sauce.
It is then served with cabbage and lettuce. Along with the chicken larb, Chang says papa-ya salad is “among the many local favorites” from Thailand and Southeast Asia offered at Bangkok Chef.
