Ravenous workers in the busy industrial neighborhood of Mapunapuna and other island residents on Oahu know that Kau Kau Grill is the spot to get the most satisfying plates to fill their bellies at lunchtime.
Besides serving up scrumptious flavor combinations, the eatery piles the plate lunches high with hefty portions, ensuring that no one walks away hungry.
Business owners Ty Takishita and Miles Oyasato opened the restaurant in 2013 with a goal of amping up the offerings available within the local plate lunch environment. Kau Kau’s flavorful menu items definitely struck a chord with patrons.
The eatery receives rave reviews for its dishes bursting with made in-house entrees such as Garlic Ahi and Fried Salmon Combo with Teri Chicken. Plates also include rice and tossed salad or the eatery’s signature macaroni salad made with spaghetti noodles.
One item the restaurant is most known for is its celebrated spicy Krazy Rice, which is uniquely flavored with the eatery’s in-house barbecue sauce, a special spice blend, bits of pulled rib ends and onions.
Ryan Souza, the chef and manager, shares that among Kau Kau Grill’s plates is the K Special ($19, $20 with Krazy Rice). This dish features fall-offthe-bone tender barbecue baby back ribs and delicious spicy ahi. The baby back ribs are slow-cooked for six hours and get a nice char on the grill. They are then slathered with a positively lip-smacking house-made barbecue sauce. Meanwhile, the spicy ahi combines the fresh cubes of fish with aioli, green and white onions and tobiko eggs to create a treat for taste buds.
Surf and Turf ($17, $18 with Krazy Rice) perfectly melds yummy treats from both the land and water. This dish consists of a combo with pulehu short ribs and garlic shrimp. The meaty ribs are dusted with a house-made seasoned salt mix and expertly charred on the grill. The shrimp in this combination plate are cooked with a flavorful house-made garlic puree and topped with parsley.
Another great choice customers can indulge in is the Trust Us Special ($17, $18 with Krazy Rice), a delish dish that features those addictive barbecue baby back ribs and the establishment’s mouthwatering garlic shrimp.
Keeping all this appetizing fare in mind, it’s no wonder that loyal patrons keep returning in droves to this beloved local grill.
