Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word “brilliant” as distinctive, striking or very bright. In a similar fashion, these synonyms also describe the exceptional cuisine served at The Brilliant Ox in Ala Moana Center.
A gastropub and restaurant located at the center’s third floor Hookipa Terrace, The Brilliant Ox opened its doors in January of this year.
The restaurant’s owners wanted to put together a concept that showcased brilliant food and drinks in a unique space at Ala Moana, which had formerly been Pearl Ultra Lounge.
Since then, the eatery featuring American and local-style dishes with an ingenious twist, has developed innovative menu items for lunch, weekend brunch and weekend late night hours. Among the best sellers prized by patrons are Teriyaki Beef Short Ribs, Okinawan Sweet Potato Croquettes and Ox Fries, which are luscious fries smothered in rich oxtail gravy and aged cheddar fondue.
Besides its flavorful food, Brilliant Ox also boasts a warm, inviting ambience. A lounge area on the lower portion of the restaurant has recently been added to cater to guests wanting to sip on cocktails and have a bite to eat in the evening.
The spacious restaurant can seat approximately 140 in the dining area, or 170 including seats at the bar. Reservations are welcome — from small to large. Large parties can reserve the entire restaurant or a part of it for upcoming holiday parties, company functions, mixers or birthdays.
PLATES YOU’LL WANT TO EMBRACE
The Brilliant Ox surges forward to pull away from the herd, as it offers innovative, fresh dishes that draw inspiration from many cultures.
For example, the restaurant’s Teriyaki Beef Short Ribs ($29) presents Japanese-influenced flavor prepared in an American way. This item requires a two-day process, during which the ribs are rubbed with salt and allowed to sit for 24 hours, and then braised for 3 1/2 hours. The delectable shortribs are served with teriyaki sauce and flavorful Brussels sprouts.
Shrimp Toast ($14) is an appetizer that draws upon flavors from around the globe. The restaurant staff whips up a yummy shrimp mousse and spreads it on Japanese milk bread. The deep-fried pieces of toast topped with furikake are served with Sambal Mayo dipping sauce and a fresh lemon wedge.
So, the next time you are looking for extraordinary dishes to tantalize your taste buds, make sure to “steer” yourself in the direction of The Brilliant Ox.
