It’s all about quality ingredients and careful prepa ration at Asian Mix, a small store located under Beretania Safeway. Take the Honey Roasted Barbecue Pork ($13 per pound), which is made fresh every day and has always been a popular choice among customers.

“We believe that a good dish begins with high quality products, which is why we always use top-grade pork shoulder,” says owner Daniel Leung. The pork is then cut and marinated all night. The next day, it’s roasted for 50 minutes to an hour and finally glazed with honey for a sweet shine.

“This is one of those dishes you have to get every day,” says Leung. “They not only make it once a day, but they make it up to three or four times. Our staff is constantly making it until late afternoon.”

Other yummy dishes are Gon Lo Mein and Orange Flavor Chicken, priced at $9.95 each. The latter is crispy, crunchy and topped with an addictive sauce.

Leung also recommends the Singapore Style Rice Noodle ($7.95). “Singapore style means we use a yellow Indian curry sauce,” says Leung. The flavorful stir-fry dish has shrimp, barbecue pork, shredded onions, green onions, bean sprouts and egg. The rice noodle is prepared carefully: firm, but not tough.

“It also can’t be too soft — otherwise it gets too soggy,” says Leung. There are multiple steps to reaching that perfect consistency: They boil the noodles, let them cool down and lay them out to dry a bit, before cooking them with the other ingredients.

Open since 2012, Asian Mix has found a dedicated customer following despite its modest size. When the dishes are selling out multiple times throughout the day, it’s clear that Asian Mix is doing food right.
